Generate/SWE Engineering Design Process Workshop

Background:

While working with Generate Product Development as the Engineering Events Coordinate, I was tasked with creating events across different engineering orgs at Northeastern. One of the first groups that worked with was the Society of Women Engineers.

Workshop

SWE and Generate Product Development tailors itself to young engineers who are just starting to learn about ins and outs of engineering. I decided it would be interesting to host a workshop where Generate’s directors and technical leads would teach, demonstrate, and work thru the engineering design process. The students were tasked to design and create their own inventions. We also shared previous and current Generate clients and project leads who were female!

At each phase of the process, we had accompanying scripts and slides prepared for the Generate leads. To further cement the learnings, I lead the group in a engineering design example work where they were tasked with solving a simple problem. During each step of the design process, the teams were tasked with understanding and presenting the work at each phase. For brainstorming, they were given different drawing mediums to sketch out their ideas. Finally, the girls were tasked with using paper, pipe cleaners, and popsicle sticks for prototyping. These final designs were shared then with the group!
