WPI Formula SAE Engine Block Scan

Background:

Formula SAE is a student design challenge created by SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) where students are tasked to design, build, and race a car of their own design.

WPI student came to the 3DExperience Lab to create a 3D scan of their engine block that wil be used in their designs and documentation.

Problem:

The WPI Formula SAE team wanted to include a CAD model of their exact engine block in their designs and documentation

Actions:

A Creaform HandyScan 3D in combination with VXElements were used to create a STL of the model. The engine block was elevated to allow for 360 degrees of scanning.

Problems Faced:

Engine Block was very elaborate and detailed

Solution: Patience and care was taken in scanning detailed locations. Settings were adjusted for different material colors and detail. Mesh was adjusted for optimal output

Results:

Created an accurate STL of the engine block to be used in their calculations, design, and documentation of their SAE car

Personal Growth:

Practicing using skills and techniques from previous scans (bike scan)

Developed strategic approach to modeling an engine block from different angles.

Learned a bit more about engines and cars while communicating with WPI SAE team while working on scan
